The 2017 RPMDA 41st Annual Convention in Atlanta attracted 169 attendees, including 26 exhibitors, and 32 first-time attendees. Among the many convention attractions, members participated in a CNN/Aquarium Tour, a tour of the J.W. Pepper facilities, a Scavenger hunt, and the Annual Awards banquet. Educational sessions were stronger than ever for 2017. The convention mood this year was upbeat as members and guest speakers addressed the challenges of today’s marketplace, sharing ideas about new technologies, print product, social media marketing, staff training, merchandising strategies and more. Gear Fischer, President of Peaksware (owner of Alfred Music), kicked off the convention with a session on the state of the industry and how dealers can do a better job of connecting with their customers. Rounding out the week, the session, RPMDA (TED) Talks About Print Music, moderated by Alan Friedman, featured four speakers who reflected on the state of the industry and shared their ideas for its future.
DOROTHY AWARD: A highlight of every convention is the announcement of the Dorothy at the closing dinner, given for a lifetime of service and achievement in the music industry. It is RPMDA’s highest honor. The 2017 honoree is Ron Manus of Alfred Music. Ron is a second-generation recipient of the Dorothy. He began his long and distinguished career under the mentorship of his father, Morty, before taking over the business. In 2016, Alfred Music was acquired by Peaksware. Ron is now acting as Alfred’s Chief Business Development Officer.
SERVICE AWARD: Eric Ebel of NAMM, received the 2017 Sandy Feldstein Service Award for his ongoing and generous support on behalf of NAMM.
